The theme includes industrial research and pilot testing services and projects for enterprises, also carried out in collaboration with universities and public research centres. It also includes funding for the strengthening of facilities and laboratories of universities and research centres and for technology transfer to enterprises (technological districts, innovation hubs).

Researchers in enterprises

The percentage of researchers compared to the overall employed in enterprises rose in Italy from 0.3% in 2010 to 0.5% in 2021.
In the 8 regions of Southern Italy, the overall share of researchers in enterprises in 2021 is 0.3% while in 2010 was 0.1%

Number of researchers as a percentage of the total number of employees

Employees in knowledge-intensive sectors as a percentage of total number of employees, of enterprises’ local units of industry and service sectors

The share of employees in knowledge-intensive industry and services sectors reached 18.5% of the total in Italy in 2020 compared to 17.2% in 2012.
On the other hand, in the 8 regions of Southern Italy it stood at 15.0 % in 2020 compared to 14.2 % in 2012.

Since 2007 up to today, the value of projects monitored and supported by cohesion policies in Research and innovation has exceeded 15 billion euros, out of which around 9 billion relate to projects financed in the 2014-2020 programming period.
