The Final Events of ASOC 2018-2019

This 3 and 4 June in Rome, at the CNR Conference Hall in Piazzale Aldo More, the two-day closing event for the 2018-2019 edition of At the School of OpenCoesione (ASOC).

The two days were dedicated to the students and teachers of the top-ten teams from this edition of ASOC, as well as the teams that received special mentions for the work they did throughout the school year.

The 300 students from all around Italy were given the opportunity to present the projects monitored and to attend “special lessons”, such as the one held by Roman rapper Amir Issaa, who has been involved in other school-related projects and met with the students on the afternoon of the first day to talk about integration and the power of words. Day two of the 2018-2019 ASOC Awards featured two other exceptional guests, Milena Gabanelli, writer for the column of data journalism for Corriere della Sera, “Dataroom”, who encouraged the students to reflect on how to interpret data and on the cost of quality information, and Giuseppina Paterniti, director of the Italian news broadcast TG3, who talked about the newsworthiness of information.

On 5 June, at the end of the two closing days, two teams from the top ten were flown to Brussels, where they were given the opportunity to tour European institutions and tell of their experiences with civic monitoring at ANSA Europe. Also on 5 June, another team went to the Italian Senate to present their civic monitoring project to the Committee for Industry, Commerce & Tourism, while the third-place team had the chance to visit the TG3 broadcast studios at Saxa Rubra in Rome and to attend a broadcast meeting.
