La Corsa Rosa della Coesione

11/05/2019

Running alongside the 2019 Giro d’Italia, the multi-stage bicycle race that has been held in Italy for over a century, Corsa Rosa della Coesione (a reference to the iconic pink jersey, the maglia rosa, worn by the race leader) will be following the race with a selection of projects executed at the various stops of the 21 stages of the Giro with the help of cohesion policy funding. From the start in Bologna today to the arrival in Verona on 2 June, a total of 70 projects in 12 regions have been selected, for a total cost of some €67 million.

Largely executed with funding from the 2007-2013 programming cycle and from structural funds, the projects selected concern ten different areas with a particular emphasis on bike route construction and maintenance and on mobility in general, on sports, on urban furniture, and on the reclamation of sites of historical, cultural and environmental interest. For each stage of the Giro d’Italia, we will present details on each project or group of projects executed in the various cities at the start and finish of each stage.

While cyclists will be covering 3,578.8 km from start to finish over the 21 stages, Corsa Rosa della Coesione will be covering €67 million for 70 projects!

Before the Corsa Rosa begins, here are the numbers on the projects executed with the help of cohesion-policy funding to build or restore bike paths (project category CUP 014 – Bike Routes) throughout Italy and published on OpenCoesione: 323 projects for a total cost of roughly €325 million.

The Italian regions that benefited most from cohesion funding for this purpose were: Abruzzo, Puglia, Sardinia, and Veneto (see the data).
