Cohesion policy, waste and composting plants: a Data Card

28/11/2021

On the occasion of the 2021 edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), scheduled between 20 and 28 November, OpenCoesione publishes a Data Card dedicated to waste in cohesion policy.

Starting from the projects available in the focus dedicated to the waste (released for the first time on the occasion of the dissemination of the data of the National Monitoring System - 30 April 2021), the narrative choice fell on operations aimed at improving the capacity to deal efficiently the organic fraction of municipal solid waste by the means of plants dedicated to this purpose.

The optimal management of the organic fraction represents in fact an important challenge for Italy: already today it represents 38.8% of the total separated waste, breaking down by almost fifteen percentage points - according to the latest ISPRA report of 2020 - paper and cardboard ( 24.9%). However, a significant portion of the total has not yet been intercepted in dedicated plants, with huge differences at the territorial level, also due to inadequate plant engineering in some Regions, such as most of those in the South.

Sardinia is a separate case, where - also thanks to the cohesion policy - it has been possible to carry out interventions capable of treating almost 90 percent of the organic fraction in composting plants. Three of the five projects described in the Data Card are located on this island.
