03/08/2021

The focus dedicated to projects concerning urban waste and its management has been published in the open data section of the OpenCoesione portal.

The focus gathers, according to the last data update at 30th April 2021 of the National Monitoring System, 2,185 projects relating to the 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 programming periods, for a total public cost of over 2.27 billion euros (with 1.18 billion euros of commitments and 759.7 million euros of payments). Cohesion resources for both programming periods amount to 2.06 billion euros.

There are 1,634 projects relating to the 2007-2013 programming period and 551 those being implemented in the 2014-2020 period. In relation to the territorial distribution, according to the expenditure eligibility rules of the cohesion policy for this particular policy area, the projects significantly concentrate resources in the regions of the Mezzogiorno area and in particular in the regions of Calabria, Campania, Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia.

In the two programming periods considered, the programmes financed by the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC) support the largest share of resources invested in urban waste management projects - over 60 per cent of the total public funding equal to approximately 1.37 billion euro - while those supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) guarantee over 829 million euro.

Overall 84% of the resources were used for the carrying out of public works, in particular for construction works, waste plant setting up and equipment, for a value of 1.94 billion euros
